The actual First Wed July 6th

Even though I had just been to the same place, I always expect to find something different. This First Wed was no exception!

Off we went! Thanks Jerry for the photo!

Looky here! I have no idea what they were viewing.

The Narrow-leaf Morning Glory (Ipomoea shumardiana) had a late bloom. Not sticking entirely to the trail, I had missed this rare and special flower on the scouting trip. Certainly always a nice treat to see it in bloom! Great photo Jerry!

A young Garden Spider (Argiope aurantia) was waiting on a meal!

A foliose lichen on the pine tree! Another of Jerry’s photos. Thanks!

The half way point was at a lovely pond. Rushes, dragonflies, and the lovely Blue Mud Plantain (a photo of it is in yesterday’s post) were all here. We just stood for a few moments soaking it all in!

Next was the Prairie Boopie or Graceful Range Grasshopper (Boopedon gracile). Food preferences are not known. However, it is suspected it dines on grasses. Interestingly, the males are able to fly and the females can not. So this one was a male. Not much is known about the Boopie. But the species has not been categorized as a pest.

I first spotted this little treefrog on the ground in the pine needles. In fact, it was hard to miss. Immediately, it hopped onto the tree. Then it decided to play peek-a-boo. LOL.

So what was sticking out of its mouth. Maybe an insect?

Just a little further down the trail, a Leopard Frog jumped across the path. Indeed, it was hard to see amongst the leaves!

So this was my last photo at the grasslands on the First Wed walk, Lupine Bug (Megalotomus quinquespinosus)! BugGuide says it likes mostly legumes. This bug belongs in the Alydidae (Broad-headed Bugs). There are 30 species in 13 genera in North America.

To summarize, it was great to be out with fellow nature appreciators! Moreover, the heat did not stop our enjoyment! And thank you to Jerry for sharing his photos!

  1. Looks like a wonderful day. I especially love the frogs and morning glory. I think the tree frog was having fun playing hide and seek. .
