Base of the Mesa

It was time to head down from the mesa. The plan was to walk near the base. Always a special place to look for special treasures that the Garnett Preserve has to offer.

The Queen’s Delight (Stillingia texana) had changed to its lovely fall red leaves!

The Prairie Gaillardias (Gaillardia aestivalis) were still blooming, but I was taken by the beauty of the seed heads!

A very pleasant surprise to find the American Blueheart (Buchnera americana) still in bloom!

The plant brings memories back to me. Why, because it took me multiple years to see it in bloom at the Garnett Preserver with Shirley and Hugh.

Looking down the throat, I wondered where the anthers were.

Peeling back the flower, I found it deep down the throat. Someone would need to do a deep dive for its pollination. 😉

Drooping tunas!

This was the most special find in the plant department, Hall’s Dalea (Dalea hallii)! Hugh had told me the approximate location of the plant. However I had never been able to find it. So I had never seen it there until this visit. Hugh was always proud to show me his prize winning Hall’s Dalea photo he had taken. I wished I had asked him for a copy. Nonetheless, it was great to finally find the Hall’s Dalea at the preserve.

More to come from the base of mesa tomorrow!

Is There a Market for Edible Cactus in the United States?

Keep looking!
