Third day

Gosh was it ever windy today over at the Caddo NG. But that was pretty much everywhere in North Texas. However today, we were mostly shielded from the wind by the tree line. And the wind made it not so hot. Update on today’s mission…we found 20 plants of Baptisia. No Frosted Elfins, but then again it was awfully windy.

Before Jeanne and I left for the survey, we found the beaver lodge on lake at Bonham State Park. We had walked out by the lake where we thought park people had cut down trees along the shore. Park people no, beavers had done all the work!

First flower at the Ladonia Unit, Fringed Puccoon!

Second find, Ground Plum (Astragalus crassicarpus)!

I admired this snag from afar, but Alan decided to get a closer look. He was rewarded with a mouse. Maybe he will share his photo soon with us.
Third a Grape Hyacinth (Muscari neglectum)! Very few were actually in the unit.

Beautiful Goldeneye Lichen (Teloschistes exilis)!

Here is what you need for the masquerade ball.

In case, I need a new leg bone?

It not always easy in the field. But it is still well worth it!

Keep looking!

The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.

  1. The first time I heard Fringed Puccoon ID’d, I thought the name was French Puccoon – which suits it, as it’s very frilly. One of my favorites. And the Goldeneye lichen is gorgeous. Mary has truly given me an appreciation of lichens as well as so much more.

  2. Pictures of the mouse I found under the bark of the dead oak tree will be sent later this afternoon so that Mary can share. Need to download and process the photos from my real camera, Canon 6D with 100 mm Macro.
