Cool weather

Well, it certainly seems cooler to me. I mean the high at the house today only made it to 94F. Plus I thought the NNE wind was a definite bonus! However no matter the weather there are things to enjoy.

The flower and the fused sepals of the Four O’clock (Mirabilis) are my first example.
It is easy to see why the 5-fused sepals are sometimes mistaken for the flower. The sepals are just as beautiful as the actual flower!
The Leavenworth’s Eryngo (Eryngium leavenworthii) that have not developed their inflorescences will still host the the stink bug nymphs.

This photo was from two days ago. It was just turning its gorgeous purple!
Yesterday it was further along!

An overall shot. When this annual plant really starts flowering the bees, butterflies and any number of pollinators will be crowding in to get a drink. A great splash of color for sure to an otherwise brown patch.
A new Buprestid beetle for me, the Lined Buprestis (Buprestis lineata)! According to BugGuide, its larvae likes dead pines (Pinus). And several of our slash pines have died this year. So we have ample supply for its larvae needs. πŸ™‚
Oops, Kathy accidently stepped on a moth out her door. Ahh, poor thing. πŸ™ She ID’ed as a Walnut Sphinx moth. And the green eggs squashed out. Perhaps Kathy has some ham to go with the green eggs? Thanks Kathy!

  1. Ha ha.
Love your weather reports because it tells me when to be looking for possible changes down here. Not today yet. 101. But we have some clouds. Hope your NNE wind reaches us.

  2. Me too Suzanne.
Well Mary your cooler temp got here. But 99 felt the same as 102. And the weather station said NNE but most of the time registered 0 mph.

  3. Your north breeze came again today, about 2 mph. And still got to 102. You just have to blow on that front harder Mary.
