Check In

So I told you that I was going to go back to check in with my moss friends, Funaria serrata. In fact I did.

It appeared that the capsules were forming!
A few were really growing big (in relative terms). Just remember they are in fact very tiny. πŸ˜‰ So glad to see my friends doing well. πŸ™‚
The flat leaved Fissidens moss! It was time to move on and explore more.

Small mushrooms!
A beautiful moss covered mound!
Further down my path were these lovely bronze brown mushrooms!
Camphorweed (Heterotheca) despite several freezes was pushing on.
These were the exciting find of the day, the Jelly Babies (Leotia lubrica)! So I didn’t know until I got home that these were the same species as found over at the Caddo NG last spring. They looked so different!
However I knew (well I thought so anyway) they were some kind of Jelly Babies. But these had the ruffled edges and not so smooth tops.
Furthermore to confirm my suspicious I looked closely to find no gills or pores underneath. Searching I found some examples of similar looking to these. And reading further, I also discovered their appearance is variable. iNaturalist calls them Ochre Jelly Club. Others call these Yellow Jelly Babies. I like the latter better. πŸ™‚

Now I will need to go back again to see the grasslands’ Funaria serrata and the Yellow Jelly Babies progress. FYI, I have even found the Funaria serrata here at home.

Hope you got out today as we brace for the cold front tomorrow!

  1. Yellow jelly babies. Great name and they’re beautiful. So are the bronze mushrooms. Great pictures of both.

  2. Great finds all the way around! Super cute jelly babies.

Tea bag article – plastic everywhere!!!!!! may need to go to loose tea……

  3. Jelly Babies just might be my favorite fungus name. πŸ˜ƒ I was relieved to find my preferred brand of tea bags on the plastic-free list (Republic of Tea). I thought their bags were made of paper (and they are) but you never know.

    1. Yeah for you. Unfortunately mine were not🀨 but I have slowly started going to loose tea as go through what I got. Plus I found you can rip open the little bags and put the leaves in a tea infuser. So at least I won’t drinking the micro plastic.
