Wiggling Tail

Most everyday I walk our paths. And I never know what interesting life awaits me. 🙂

Yesterday we had a hard freeze. And the Frostweed (Verbesina virginica) really did their thing!
Whoa was this cool (pun ;-)!

We had turned off the faucet and still the hose had dripped to form an ice stalagmite overnight!

Here was a whooper of a stinkhorn (Phallus)! And the “head” had fallen. This was the second stinkhorn over the last couple of days that had done this. Weird.

A snake in the path! My feet stopped. The head was not visible.

Wow look at the speckles! They were a Speckled Kingsnake (Lampropeltis holbrooki)!

They wiggled their tail like a rattlesnake. I never got to see their head. After they “rattled”, they disappeared further in the grass. It was very exciting because I had never encountered this species before. Additionally I found them at home!

  1. I saw your kingsnake observation on iNaturalist. Very cool to spot one in the wild. I kept a captive-bred one as a teaching animal for many years. Interesting article about cat coloration.
