Ruby Grant

Over the long holiday weekend we headed north to green Oklahoma! And yes it is much greener up there. In Norman, a 1/2 inch was recorded last night. Lucky dogs! 🙂 They needed the rain too. Now please send some to us in Texas, eh.

Claire and Briar showed me one of their favorite in-town parks, the Ruby Grant Park. As you can see from the grass the 1/2 inch of rain last night was appreciated.
A soldier beetle (Cantharidae) tops a gumweed (Grindelia ciliata).

Spotted Cucumber Beetles (Diabrotica undecimpunctata) were spotted.
Both Agalinis homalantha and Agalinis heterophylla were seen in the prairie. This was A. homalantha. It’s pedicel is longer than the A. heterophylla which is sessile to the stem.
A grass funnel spider!

Ok what was a tree cricket (Oecanthus) doing on the Gumweed? LOL The family is omnivores. One “genus Oecanthus is predatory on other insects, especially those with soft bodies (Insects of Cedar Creek). One example: aphids. Oecanthines also feed on leaf fibers, leaves, fruits.” In case you were wondering the common name tree cricket is because many hang out in trees.
Goldenrod Soldier Beetle (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus)!

A glob of sap on a Mexican Plum looked like a turtle.

Norman residents and visitors are lucky to have the Ruby Grant Park! Thank you Ruby!

  1. I am so glad we got to share our wild parks with you! Learned a lot of new plant stuff too; thank you!! It’s good to have an idea of the goldenrods especially. Briar is still tired. She likes y’all.

  2. It’s so nice that Norman appreciates their prairies. In Fort Worth all they want to do is mow mow mow for the most part.
