>> Buck Moth April 30, 2023April 30, 2023 5 Comments Yesterday while at Chalk Mountain we found several caterpillars. You saw one of the Monarch cats in yesterday’s post. This was one of the others we saw. It is a Buck Moth (Hemileuca maia -tentative). Apparently the genus spines can be very painful. In fact, one crawled onto my hand. However, I was lucky and it did not sting me. Whew! Really awesome, eh! I was very carefully handling it this morning. Look at those spines! Certainly looks lock and loaded! Another view! The adult moth will be a beautiful creature. Now a bit of disappointing news… The nest blew loose in the wind without the protection of the plum thicket. The eggs were scattered on the ground. 🙁 But the ants were getting a good meal. 🙂 Keep looking! The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.
Sad about the nest. Bummer. Sure glad that cat didn’t sting you. Those spines look wicked.
I was real glad too. 😳
Sorry about the vireo nest! Sounds like you have a new tenant in your countertop complex!
Yep and the new tenant likes live oak. 👏🏻
Cool cat and sorry about vireos!
