Cats

I love cats, well caterpillars of the Butterflies and Moths (Lepidoptera) order. I mean they often are included in the Curry Foster Home collection. LOL. So think about all the good they do like pollination and food for others in the animal kingdom.

With its heads lying face down this cat blends in!
It usually found on the underside of a Hackberry leaf.

So if you did not recognize the critter, it is the larva of the Hackberry Emperor! The little antler like horns are just adorable. If using the Eastern Count deer method, you could say it has 8-points. 😉 Though unlike deer, both sexes have horns. LOL Additionally, the number of points varies from individual to individual. In 2012, I raised over a dozen of this species. Moreover, I determined that the multiple face colors (green to black) varied, but still was the same species.
A pre-cat (i.e. egg) of a monarch on Green Milkweed (Asclepias viridis).

When the monarch egg is almost ready to hatch the top shows the turns black. Once it turns black it will emerge sometime in the next 24 hours.
The remains of a monarch eggs on the bud of the Green Milkweed. The tiny cats will turn around and eat the egg shell. Yum!
Nestled down in the buds of a Green Milkweed, a little guy was munching away. In fact, I went looking at multiple milkweeds and found 5 or 6 cats on the milkweeds in one area near our woods. That was pretty exciting!

So adorable, eh!

The Trinity Forks chapter’s plant sale will have milkweeds and lots of natives available for you to help feed all the wonderful insects on April 29th.

  1. Could you hear any sounds coming from the chowing down cat? Is the chewing audible? I didn’t catch anything on the video.
