Day 2 – Rocks, lichens and plants, oh my!

Day 2 was just as wonderful as day 1! Yesterday’s High Point Trail was 15 miles from the camp grounds. So on day 2 we decided to hang closer in the park.

The start of the Bird Haven/Vista trails begins at the petrified wood exhibit area. Off we headed. As you may notice, the day was warming up nicely and I was already shedding layers.

The rock ledges were awesome!
Like a moth to a flame, I was drawn in to investigate.
Claire documents her mother being suck in.

Indeed this ledge would have provided shade for a traveler long ago.

Impressions!

Back to the sunshine again. The lichens were amazing like this scale lichen (Psora)!

A yellow crustose lichen that was heavily pruinose. Pruina is a powdery, frost-like deposit on lichens that is typically is made of calcium oxalate crystals and/or dead cortical tissues.

Looking from above, the ledge that sucked me in earlier. Beautiful country!

An exposed vein exposed on the trail.
Echinocereus cactus! Using the Flora of Oklahoma, it would key to E. reichenbachii by the number of spines.

The rocks, lichens and plants, oh my! Indeed, they were fantastic!
