Sunday outing

A friend of Suzanne told her the Trout Lilies at Tandy Hills Natural Area were blooming now. To be or not to be as Shakespeare wrote, so were they poking up here yet? Sunday the 19th and off I went searching for the Trout Lilies on the grasslands.

Walking across the prairie, I could see quite a few of the Spring Beauties (Claytonia virginica).
Some have brighter streaks in the petals!
Watching for other signs of spring flowers between the cow patties, was a rabbit’s pile.

Green algae floated in the seepy ditch. The water was running.

Moreover, the water leads to the small grotto!

Certainly seemed like a time to watch the water. Really tiny insects were flying over the water I thought. However, as I sat quietly, I finally saw that many of the insects were actually skating on the water. These bugs probably were only a few millimeters in size. In the mp4, the shadow of one crosses in my shot. Then I was able to catch a few ripples.

Hugging Devil’s Toenails!

Moving down the ravine, first shot were these shelf fungus.

Beautiful!

Elbowbush (Forestiera pubescens) is dioecious. This means that plant has separate male and female plants. This is the male. Apparently the berries produced are edible. However, Charles W. Kane, a herbalist said the berries was very bitter tasting. No thank you, I believe I will pass. LOL Furthermore I am just happy to enjoy their late winter color.

  1. The ditch above the seep and the grotto remind me so much of some places on our lease area down here. Guess that is why I love the grasslands so when I used to be away from here.
That grotto is gorgeous!! Ours by our camphouse is a puddle but no flow with our drought.
I found Bluets at the farm yesterday and a Draba, which I see has been renamed, blooming down by the horse barn. Finally some good stuff! Agaritas started blooming a week ago and I found a huge one in our back pasture that smelled so good.
And today despite our drought I found a mushroom. I saw some ground lifted up about 2 inches high and 4 inches across. I lifted a piece of dirt to see why and there was a big white mushroom trying to lift up through there. Things are starting to happen!
