Down I Went

Shedding a light jacket, I headed down into a ravine.

It was easy access at this point.

Two ferns! The Purple Cliff-brake was in front. The Woodsia fern choose shelter at the base of the Red Oak πŸ™‚

On the bank the acrocarp moss, Atrichium angustatum was producing its capsules. The lighter color moss was a pleurocarp (branched) moss.

A closer look!

Further into the ravine, it got steeper!

Look at the effort this tree was doing to hang on! The side roots are so taut. Additionally, it has the curly roots that I love. πŸ˜‰

A different root and still fascinating.

From a distance I thought this was going to be trash.

Nope, it was a polypore shelf fungus that been dislodge from its host.

Knobby root, Leprapia lichen (mint green), and mosses! Certainly, you have to love a ravine!
