Michael, the fun guy

On the outing Dec. 15th, Michael came along with us. Michael is a Range Specialist for the Forest Service. And he has only been here since August.

Michael looking at the rocky hill side!

Turned out Michael had a knack for spotting mushrooms. The fun guy (fungi). 😉 LOL

This is a gilled mushroom that has gills attached to the stipe.

I had split it open to see if there was a color change. Some mushrooms will bruise or react to the air and change colors. They might change to yellow to blue to black. However, this one had no reaction. And this lucky one was the only one I tested that day.

A white gilled mushroom grew through the mosses.

Another mushroom! Here the gills extended down the stipe.

A bright orange! My tentative ID is a Waxcap (Hygrophoraceae). The Waxcaps are supposed to turn black when bruised. However, I did not test this one. 🙁 Next time I will test one.

Jeanne found these in an open glade. And to think I had started in the other direction. Great find!

The sunshine really was highlighting the gorgeous colors!

Peeling Puffball that had not started to peel yet. When it is ready to release its spores, it will look like it is peeling open, thus the common name.

Michael, I wish you much success in new career with the Forest Service!
