A Weekend trip

Over the weekend, we traveled to Portland Oregon. And we were able to squeeze in a quick trip to Mt. Tabor Park. Here are a few of the wonderful things we saw.

Along a city sidewalk, Claire spotted these mushrooms next to a tree!

This was a view towards the city. I was told Mt. Hood was in that direction. However it was a cloudy and damp day so it could not be seen.

Some lichens were just laying on the ground.
Thank goodness some of the lichens had fallen. Many of the trees were huge!

A closeup of the roots! Gnarly and beautiful! These were Big-leaf Maples (Acer macrophyllum).

Mosses and lichens!

A fruticose lichen!

A squamulose lichen!

Lichens and mosses were dripping off of the branches. This was a Bird Cherry (Prunus avium).

The Oregon White Oak (Quercus garryana) trunk may have been my favorite. Indeed, these tiny mushrooms were adorable! I had hoped they might have been a Basidiomycete lichen. These are fungi that normally form mushrooms. But alas, it was just mushrooms. Apparently the wrong substrate for the Basidiomycete lichens. Darn 🙂

Close up!

More strange and wonderous lichens!

Water droplets hung on the moss capsules!

Another ground find! The branches are inflated. It could possibly be in the genus Hypogumania.

What a lovely foliose yellow lichen! Ah, but if we had more time to look.

Tomorrow, I will show a few more of our finds!

Keep looking!

  1. Super fun to explore a different part of the country! The Pacific Northwest is obviously a moss and lichen lover’s dream location.
