A blizzard

This was the last day (April 22nd) of surveying on this trip.

Just as it has every day, my eyes were watchful for the Frosted Elfins. However, my main mission that day (21st) was to collect Baptisia species for BRIT at the different patch locations. With permission, I had gotten the Blue Wild Indigo the previous day. And as always I checked the plants I planned to collect for insects. Accordingly this Frosted Elfin had to be transferred to another plant having failed to spot it earlier.

A beautiful shiny Leaf Chafer beetle (Cetoninae) was nestled on the Baptisia! Over the course of looking for the elfin cats, I spotted spiders, beetles, weevils, flies, hover flies, and several other types of caterpillars.

Pepperweed had finished blooming. Love it seeds!

Traveling to the northern Caddo units, I recorded this location of the Yellow Wild Indigo for the soil type along side the road. It covered a large area on the private property.

A worn Frosted Elfin! I had not seen adults on this trip until this one at the roadside.

A Purple Woodsorrel (Oxalis violacea)!

Yellow Star-grass was near my last stop!

The last collection was the Cream Wild Indigo!

A bumblebee were busily working!

The last Frosted Elfin of the trip found on the Cream Wild Indigo!

Finally, the last awesome find of the day were these Devil’s Urn or Black Cup (Urnula craterium). They were big for a cup fungus being about 3 cm (1 1/14″) across!

In the Shirley tradition of a frozen treat at the end of the day, we topped it off with a Choco Brownie Extreme blizzard. Yum yum!

Keep looking!

The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.

  1. How sweet to follow in the Shirley tradition of ice cream.
I used to drool over all the different baptisias on those OK trips. but there used to be a huge colony of sphaeracarpa just north of The Colony. Of course development did those in.

  2. Such a rewarding day in the field with a perfect end to the day. I’m sure your heard mother saying your treat was not real ice cream. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Yes, I often heard that about soft serve. ๐Ÿ˜‚ No DQ frozen treats for her. Just Braums and Drumstick ice cream. ๐Ÿ˜Ž only โ€œrealโ€ dairy for the dairymanโ€™s daughter.
