Photos by Alan

Alan joined Jeanne and I on March 29th at Caddo NG. Also another volunteer, Laura, came with Alan on the search. It was so nice to have the extra sets of eyes. Thank you both!

Isn’t this the most adorable face? Sure was a treat for Alan. If only the rest of us could have seen the shy little guy as well.

I was envious of his find for sure.

These Spring Beauties were scattered around the field!

Another tiny flower, the Dwarf-dandelion!

Alan got his finger in this photo for scale.

Strange nest. What was weird was that the nest’s center hole had another lid like layer.

The Eastern-tailed Blues are plentiful now.

A nice shot of one of my favorite lichens, Palmetto Lichen (Ramalina celastri)!

Back side of a Prairie Buttercup (Ranunculus facicularis)!

Front view!

A whole patch!

The Eastern Tent Caterpillar web! I really think this is such a cool house. It is very tough to tear apart. So it must provide really good protection from predators.

A closeup of the cats in the web. Even though they are concern to many people, they usually do little permanent damage to a healthy tree. The larvae will leave silk trails and pheromones to communicate the presence of foliage and quality of food. Technologically they so much more advanced than humans. These critters have figured how to run fiber cable for smells. We have so much to learn!

Thank you again Alan for sharing your photos from the Caddo NG.

  1. Another great post! Good photos, Alan. Interesting to learn that mice shelter under loose tree bark – I thought they were almost exclusively terrestrial.

  2. Yes thank you Alan. All great pics. Especially the sweet mouse. Dont know how you got close enough to take pic.
