Another Night on the Other Half

So on our last night (Dec. 19) at the park we headed out to get the other half of the Lost Creek Trail. It was slowing go at night with the roots, rocks and steps that lie in the trail. Jim led the way with the flashlight. And I was a bit behind.

The moon was half full.

Part of the blue glow are the minerals in the boulders.
Here you can definitely spot the crustose lichens!
Same rock and lichens.
The green moss reflects red and was pretty neat too!
I like to call these lichens Bullseye lichens. 😉

While I had my light aimed on a rock a moth flew in!

Its eyes and part of abdomen glowed blue. I found that many beetles eyes also will glow blue under the UV.
One last UV test on a tiny Powdery Cloak Fern (Argyrochosma dealbata).
So I wanted to know if the powdery underside would glow.
The answer was not really.

It was time to call it a night with Jim leading the way back to camp!

And that folks is all from Ft. Richardson State Park on this trip. Indeed a fabulous trip with plants, lichens, mosses, birds, and a Hoary Bat recorded. Additionally we enjoyed eating out at the Casa Grande, Roma Pizza, Dairy Land Drive Inn, and the Herd’s Burgers. Moreover all were delicious!
