A Lot of Frass

Often times I go looking for those that shelter under a fold on a leaf. Mostly I just find a lot of frass. Hey frass happens. LOL.

A Mustang Grape (Vitis mustangensis) is a good place to look. Furthermore I would love to find the larvae of the Grapeleaf Skeletonizer (Harrisina americana) which uses the grapes as a host plant.
Four years ago I found the adults but the larvae has alluded me. And still the hunt for the larvae continues.

After checking many of the leaves yesterday morning I found this little one instead.
Tentatively ID’d as a Obscure Psara (Psara obscuralis). These kinds of translucent cats are so fascinating because you can see their guts working.
Redbud Leafflolder Moth (Fascista cercerisella) larva is another one I am thrilled to find tucked under a fold. And of course they are found on a Redbud.
Indeed they are very distinctive with their black and white bands!

So maybe you will only find a lot of frass looking. However when you do find a larvae, I hope you smile too. πŸ™‚

  1. I have so many leafrollers on my eggplant. I hope they finish their life cycle soon so my plant can get back to growing fruit.

    1. My tomatoes got their leaves back after the sphrinx stripped them. Now I got another batch again stripping. ☺️ hopefully you will get some egg plants.
