A Few Good Insects

Well, actually I believe all insects are good. They certainly all have their place in the ecosystem!

The brown Blister Beetle (Epicauta immaculata) also comes in a gray form as well. Most in this genus are primarily parasitoids of grasshopper eggs. However some will feed on Epicauta species eggs. Still others are crop “pests”.
Here was a Darkling Beetle (Blapstinus fortis) on Western Horse Nettle (Solanum dimidiatum). Certainly a handsome one I thought! Fortis means strong.
Next stop was at the Square-bud Primrose (Oenothera berlandieri)!
Here was a very tiny and shy friend. It belongs in the Case-bearing Leaf Beetles (Pachybrachis virgatus)! BugGuide says they are uncommon.
Then I stopped to turn over a Lizardtail (Oenothera curtiflora) leaf. Ahhh, some Hemiptera – True Bug eggs that had recently hatched.
Then I saw the almost invisible Pale-sided Leafhopper (Sobara palliolata) nymph. Beautiful!
Last one was black beetle (Coleoptera) I was not able to ID.

And that was my day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. The pale-sided leaf hopper is quite beautiful. I read that major news networks plan to boycott coverage of the parade tomorrow. I sure hope that’s true.
