Bear Encounter!

Today was the Bonham State Park OutDoor Expo. If you didn’t come you missed out on fun and an educational day! Here is a bit of what you missed.

This was my designated spot for the event!
My display for the work that Jeanne and I do at the Caddo/LBJ National Grasslands. We basely look at, well everything. Plants, bugs, bryophytes, and lichens.

Folks got to look under the microscope.

Kids were interested too. There were some WOWs when looking through the microscope and in UV box at the colorful lichens, scorpion, and opossum hair!
They were amazed at the tiny world!
Certainly more WOWs when looking into the UV box at a crustose lichen glow bright yellow!
Next to my table were folks from TPWD cultural branch. They were showing kids the strength of arches bult by the CCC. Furthermore the kids built their own using wooden blocks. Scott demo how strong their arches were. πŸ™‚

Another cool demo was the stream ecology demo.
So the barn quickly fell in from erosion on the narrow and straighten stream.
However on the natural side, the stream meandered and the green vegetation was holding it own. Indeed a very nice demo!

So the Dallas Paleontological Society brought the fossils!
The Buffalo Soldiers had a great table.
Here I found this journal entry intriguing!
While sitting, Jim noticed another visitor at our table. The eight-legged visitor, the Texas Ground Crab Spider (Xysticus texanus). Moreover there are 67 Xysticus species in North America. FYI, I made up the common name. πŸ˜‰
A knapping demo!
You probably were thinking, sure there was a bear encounter. Well Smokey Bear was there! A very close encounter. LOL.

Indeed what a fun day! Now you may want to make plans to attend next year!
