Case of the Missing Seed

The Black Oil Sunflower feeder was going down by half or more each night. Our feeder is about 40 inches off the ground hung on a branch above. Now we know some squirrels can make the leap. However seed was disappearing in the night. So it couldn’t be a squirrel.

We have seen the opossum come eat the seeds when another feeder was low to the ground. And yes opossum are UV positive. πŸ™‚ The racoons came to this feeder as well. But they were eating it too fast for our budget. Thus we have removed ground feeder one for now.

Last night just before 10pm I went to check if the aurora had made it down our way. Nope!
A very cute bandit was quietly working on the other side of the house.
They were really slurping up the seeds!
Looked a bit awkward at times.
Persistent paid off!
This photo was snapped when I had gone out to look for the aurora. See my reflection. πŸ™‚ I believe in this photo they were dropping off. They came twice doing the night. Once about 10pm-ish and then again about 4-5am this morning. The time stamp is standard time.

So I am not sure if both times they were the same culprit. Though they did seem to be of similar size. Next so that the seeds don’t disappear as fast I will try hanging the feeder up a bit higher.

  1. This is why we quit feeding birds. Between the white-winged doves bullying smaller birds during the day, and the mammal parade at night, we were spending a fortune every month.

  2. We had a similar issue with bandits- stovepipe style baffles solved the ptoblem! Now those little bandits as well as the squirrels must scrounge for seeds dropped by the birds. Those acrobatics are fun to watch though!
