Multiple Friends Day

Day three at the Caddo NG. We each made a number of collections. Furthermore we encountered multiple friends today.

First friend was the Red-banded Hairstreak!
Then we were sitting collecting mosses and lichens at the side of a pond. Here was a Pogonatum moss Jeanne collected. Then I looked up…
Oh my gosh! There was a Common Snapping Turtle!
They took a defensive position by drawing in their head slightly.
So I got as close as I could trying hard not to provoke them.
What wonderful claws!
They had enough of me and slipped back to their watery home!
A sawfly larva!
A small Click Beetle (Melanotus similis -tentative ID) that sat still for me. 🙂

We took one final walk when we got back to camp (Bonham State Park). And we encountered this beautiful Rat Snake. They rattled their tail and turned to warn us away. Indeed it was special! Thanks Jeanne for the movie!

Fabulous way to end the day!

  1. I love the critters. Turtle close up pic is great but my favorite is the rat snake video. Love that tongue. And the way they rattle their tails. Have made me jump a few times.
