Apache Paper Wasp

Do you like wasps? I do. Though I do not like to get stung. So if they stay away from my door, I’m happy they are here.

Some of our nest boxes have wasp nests. This girl has started her family.
It has been chilly so she has been chill as well. Some days I found her on top of the nest.
Other times she is on the underside.
She let me see her pretty pearl egg.
Then I got bold and got a top view of the nest. Most had one egg per cell.

Such a beautiful face!
Each individual wasp has different face. So in theory when the queen has her workers attending you could tell them apart. However by the time the workers are there it will be warm. And none of them will be chilled. LOL.

Additionally the wasps can tell each other apart just like you can tell differences in human faces. Indeed they can tell which is a family member and welcome. Certainly I won’t be looking to see the faces up close any soon.
