The Scoop

Fifty-two degrees felt mighty warm today. Especially after the really cold weather we have had.

Now the scoop on my outing yesterday in southern Wise County!

Our first stop on the tour was what Reese called Lookout Point. She said the trees have grown up of course since her childhood.
Further along on the hillside were the Purple Cliff Brake (Pellaea atropurpurea) and sedges.
Mosses!
Scale lichens on the rocks! In the future I hope to go back and perhaps collect some. These were on sandstone so it might be possible it is Psora tuchermannii! And that would be exciting for me.
The Goldeneye lichen (Teloschistes exilis) was fairly abundant in this area.
Sedges were thick! Reese called this a hardwood sedge ecosystem. And of course you see the gully ahead.
So you know where I gravitated towards next. 🙂
A few Common Woodsia (Woodsia obtusa) was present. However they were on the smaller side.
I showed Reese the thalloid liverwort with the starting of the sporophytes.

We were moving along at a fast clip. Reese still had more interesting habitats to share. So I will continue on with the second half tomorrow!

Love the person making the mudhole for the swallows.
