The Cold

The cold is definitely here today. Our low was 18.6F. Brrrr!

Maybe a Yellow-belled Sapsucker’s?
Regardless, the feather is beautiful!
More feathers!
Leaf Beetle (Leptinotarsa haldemani) are so cute and shiny. Additionally just a little bit of warmth will bring them out. Photo was taken on the 17th when our high was 66f.
This poor little one let me up close. It was dead. 🙁 This however allowed me see the nictitating membrane. This allows the frog to see under water and keeps the eye moist when not under water. Most Anura (tailless amphibians), some reptiles, birds, and sharks, and some mammals (such as cats, beavers, polar bears, seals and aardvarks) have full nictitating membranes; in many other mammals, a small, vestigial portion of the nictitating membrane remains in the corner of the eye.
Likewise the crane fly larva will often show up on a warm day. Of course, it is not warm today so they are nowhere to be seen. 🙂 Some people will mistake the adult as a large mosquito. However the adult does not feed. The larvae feed feed primarily on decomposing organic matter. The adult crane flies in North Texas should show up in 3 or 4 weeks.
Their rear was pretty cool. Sorta looks like a face don’t you think?

Stay warm!
