Fungi are really interesting to me. And even though some look similar on the outside there can be a range of colors inside. And since we have quite a few fungi puffballs now, I had to check them out. But only on the macro level and not microscopically.
Splitting this one open, it was this beautiful mustard color!
Another puffball also munched!
Yet another color, a pale yellow. The skin looked similar to the previous puffball. Perhaps this one was not as mature?
Some nibbling here too. I wonder if like leaf miners trails on the plants someone might be able to ID the muncher?
The above puffball was all white inside!
So on this one it looks more like stretch marks to me.
Deciding to try a new method for looking at the color inside, I cut a wedge. Another beautiful yellow!
Then I tucked the wedge back hoping it would continue to mature its spores. None of the above puffballs were actually puffing out spores yet. So they must have all been immature. Furthermore I suspected the different shades of the yellow ones could have been the same species. I just don’t know for sure.
That 1st one is like a mushroom inside a mushroom – gorgeous! Always a surprise inside – just have to look.
And that is one of my fav words ever – puhpowee!!!!
Puhpowee! Word of the day. Like Jeanne, I noticed that the first one looked like a mushroom inside of a puffball. Loved seeing the inside of the puffballs. I don’t want to try that on a really mature one spitting spores all over me, but now I’ll be tempted to peek inside some of the less mature ones I come across.
Cool puffballs

And why wasn’t there a word like that for science…because there always seems to be a word for everything. A very cool word!
I love the insides of those puffballs, especially the first one! Puhpowee Power! 🤜
Whoopeee power for puhpowee!

So neat! And it’s very neighborly of you to put them back too!
I try to put stuff back the way i find it most of the time.
