24th NPSOT Symposium

Over the weekend I attended the NPSOT symposium in New Braunfels. The Trinity Forks chapter had several members that were recognized.

Diane Wetherbee had this award winning photo! Diane wrote, “Taken at the National Butterfly Center in Mission, TX. I took the picture partly because it’s a Passiflora I hadn’t seen before, but mostly because sometimes I’m a 12-year-old boy and I thought the name “stinking passionflower” was funny.” Congratulations Diane!

On Saturday evening the awards were handed out. Another member that won was Diane Karch-Osowski. She made an adorable video of the 15th Annual Texas Native Plant Art Exhibition Reception & Student Interviews. It’s a must watch. The kids are simply the best! Congratulations to Diane!
Another very deserved member honored was Cecil Carter for the Benny J. Simpson Fellows Honors. Wow, congratulations Cecil! To see the winning photos, all photos, video, and newsletter scan the QR codes.

And I also am so honored to receive the Shirley Lusk Memorial Award 2024. Thank you to NPSOT and especially to Shirley for all that she gave to so many of us. (photo by Catherine Lusk -thanks). Indeed what a rich legacy Shirley gave us all. Thank you to Jeanne for rambling with me for many of those plant collections!

My plaque and the plant press that Shirley gave me.
And thank you to Alan Lusk and Catherine Lusk for letting me hitch a ride to the symposium with y’all. That was special to be hanging with the Lusks!
Getting home before sunset gave me the chance to look for the A3 comet again last night. The sunset had an afterglow with a faint arc.
We spotted A3 comet at 7:47pm! So it was located at about 260 degrees west. And Venus was the larger white blob to the left; slightly lower than the comet in the photo.
Now we don’t have to wait for the next chance 80,000 years from now. LOL. And you still have a chance until the end of the month!

Indeed it was quite the weekend!

  1. What a great symposium – congrats! And you are correct – the video with the kids and their art work is definitely worth watching!

  2. Thanks for posting the awards banquet paper. I always liked hearing about each person’s book, achievement, etc. when I went. I’m sure details will be in a coming state newsletter. Thanks for the link to the video. I look forward to watching it. I love the two tone wood your plaque is made with. Very nice that it describes what you did.
I tried to photograph the comet tonight but my camera just couldn’t find anything to focus on. But it looked great through binoculars. So thank you for sharing your photo with us.
