Quail Survey Done

On Thursday and today (Friday) the quail survey was done for the season. Well, except for one more point in the morning, but I am not optimistic. If I hear one I will let y’all know. It was not a banner year. Only one Bobwhite was heard. ๐Ÿ™

The sun was not quite up when we started Thursday morning.
The glabrous Sleepy Daisy (Xanthisma texanum) were still not awake at the second stop.
On Thursday we finished up at 8am. The sun was tracking its usual track in the sky. LOL

Still early, we headed out for more exploring. A spider had tightly wound up a fly!
Some places have gotten rain recently. And this large puddle still had water. Actually since it had Duckweed (Lemna), it must stay wet a lot.
Bending down to gaze into the water we saw movement. I scooped up a small sample. It was a bunch of snails congregating!
Hello friend! While we were looking at the snails this little one hopped right next to us. ๐Ÿ™‚
The mud wallow looked like a heart shape. However I have no love for the feral pigs.

A home for someone on the Flattop Goldenrod (Solidago nitida). We could see the exit holes, but was anyone home?
When I shaded the cocoon, it became semi-translucent. No one was home.
A Prairie Gaillardia (Gaillardia aestivalis) seed head!
A few of the Prairie Gaillardia (Gaillardia aestivalis) still had petals. Cute crab spider, eh!

More tomorrow from Thursday’s exploring!

  1. The South Africa fossil discovery article is so interesting! I hadn’t thought about the evolution of bovids in conjunction with human evolution.
