Look at the Frass

Yesterday was absolutely delightful weather for July. Certainly I was a bit disappointed that we only got 0.05″ of rain. However the creatures seen were pretty darn good!

The first stop was at the Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia trifida)! Indeed I almost missed the cat as it looked like the outer edge of the leaf.

The anal prolegs and the bump with hairs at the base actually looked like a long nosed face (upside down). LOL.

It decided to blend in with the stem after I kept annoying it.
Next a folded leaf was unoccupied. Sometimes that’s the way it goes.
Garden Spiders (Argiope aurantia) seemed be to plentiful this year!
The Garden Spider disposed of the June bugs on the ground after eating.
This hairy spider was in the same spot yesterday in a bundle of pecan leaves. Love its big four eyes. And goodness so hairy!
A Differential Grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis) with a hitchhiker red mite!
Cricket frog!
The tiny black ground pepper sized frass aroused my curiosity to look further at the leaf. A Plume Moth (Pterophoroidea) larva was my reward!

A nice variety of life!

  1. The hairy spider is peeking at you behind its legs. So cute. And I’m excited about the quail drug. That’s just great news

  2. Very hairy spider – what a great expression.
Do hope that the quail respond well to the new drug.
Did not realize that this was the 7th new national park created by Biden – glad to see these issues addressed.
