The Few

It was cold and a very wet morning for First Wednesday. However, seven brave or would that be crazies or extreme nature nerds met up for the outing! Take your pick. LOL And you may notice that this is not the first Wednesday of the month. And for others who may not know what First Wednesday is. Well, I lead a group usually on the first Wednesday of each month. So several changes were made for this outing. First not the first Wednesday due to my conflict of schedule. Second not at the usual grasslands location. Anyway, we had a grand day!

As I left the house it was only misty heavily. The roadsides are bursting with color.
As we got closer to the first prairie, the rain really was picking up.

We waited until the rain let up a bit. So with our rain gear on we were not going to be stopped from seeing the prairie.
The Shooting Stars (Dodecatheon meadia) was dripping in the rain. We were too. LOL And yeah for rain!
The Prairie Paintbrushes (Castilleja purpurea var citrina) and hybrid(?). Stunning!

With rain coming down harder, I did not get a focus on the Standing Winecup (Callirhoe pedata).

The White Milkwort (Polygala alba) was also not focused. 🤷🏻‍♀️ LOL
A little better focusing job on the Death-camass (Toxicoscordion nuttallii).

Then a crack of thunder! Time to retreat. Plus we were getting soaked. So we headed back to the cars. Denise kindly volunteered to lead us in our cars for a drive about. It was great! The Shooting Stars and Death-camass are really gorgeous this year. There is still time to do your own road tour in Cooke County. 🙂

After lunch we made one last quick prairie stop. The pink in the field were Shooting Stars. This may be the best year ever for them!

It will be an outing we won’t soon forget.

Thanks so much to Denise for sharing your family’s prairie with us today!

  1. I can see in the winecup photo that the prairie is full of bishop’s weed too. Wow, that’s going to be even more amazing in May.
