Why did the chicken cross the road?

Of course, to get to the other side, right? Well, for Jeanne and I, it was more than that. There was a creek on the other side. LOL

Lots of horsetails (Equisetum) were at the creek’s edge. Additionally, there was a path made by the cows that we could easily follow. Four species are listed in The Ferns and Lycophytes of Texas by Diggs and Lipcombs. Three of the species are shown in their range map for our area. Apparently one of the common names was scouring-rush because it was used by earlier settlers to clean pans.

We were joined by royalty! Princess was the dark brown one. Katie was the other happy pup. Of course, they were happy to show us around.

First sign of beavers! The hole in the bank. Beavers will often do the hole in bank on the grasslands creeks instead of the iconic lodges made with sticks.

Princess and Kati said this is the way! And the beavers had made fresh gnaws in the tree.

Do you wonder if the tree ever falls on the beaver? I bet not, they are professionals. LOL

In two places above the creek, we found these round four feet depressions. Jeanne thought maybe they were scent mounds for the beavers. So that seemed to be the most plausible explanation. Perhaps the mounds got washed away?
First dam!

Dog tracks in the water. Do you see them? Princess and Kati kept going from the creek and back up to us. It looked refreshing.

Why didn’t they finish the job?

Love the grapevines. And moreover, it looked like the perfect place to sit.

Whee, it was the perfect place for a swing! And off we headed back to car. Another fine outing on our wonderful grasslands!

Last night, we were lucky to get another .39″ in our rain bucket at 6pm. Perhaps you got some too!

  1. Interesting the beavers left that tree almost felled. Maybe they will gp back and finish the job sometime. Love the swing.
