A Rainbow’s Rare Sibling

Have you ever seen or heard of fogbow? Fogbows are caused by the small droplets inside fog or a cloud. These droplets are smaller than raindrops which makes a rainbow. However just like a rainbow, you will only see a fogbow facing away from the sun.

Yesterday, we had fog!

The fog limited visibility to about 1/8th of mile.

8:20am. A view of the pumpjack.

8:21am. There was ghost coming!

8:22am. I could just begin to see the ghostbow in the photo. There are several names for the fogbow which includes ghostbow, whitebow, white rainbow or cloudbow.

We walked a little farther and I turned to face the sun.

Coming to the House of Edgar (old well house), one end of the fogbow appeared between the well house and the tree.

At 8:23am, the fogbow was easy to see!

Continuing our walk through the woods, I stopped to say Hi to Ms. Squirrel. I really don’t know if it was a female.

Now it is 8:34am, looking across the neighbor’s field it was fading.

The woods.

A meshweaver’s web made me think, ghost ship. LOL

The fog had lifted. What an exciting morning! This had only been the second time I had witnessed a fogbow. And that was back on March 29, 2018.

So the next time fog rolls in, watch for the fogbow in the early morning. And maybe you will get lucky and see the rare fogbow!
