Pods

The word pod has several definitions.

A group of people who have limited contact with other people outside their pod, you remember the pandemic right…

A seed container that grows on some plants, for example legumes

An insect egg case (never heard of that one before)

A number of animals clustered together

And there are a few more, but enough for now.

A spider’s egg casing or as some might call it, a pod.

The Arkansas Yucca seed pod!

Christy shared this me this afternoon. A pod of American White Pelicans landed on Christy’s small lake. Other collective nouns for pelican groups includes a brief, a pouch, a scoop, and a squadron.

Christy had never seen them on her lake before. How wonderful is that? She lives about ten miles northwest of me. Thanks so much Christy for sharing your pod!

Today was a good birding day for me too. However, I didn’t get photos. I had about 40 Western Meadowlarks! It has been a while. I was first alerted of them by their bubbly songs. So I had twenty-four species for the day. Pretty good, eh.

Prescribing burning on grasslands today.

Yellow sun dog!

And it was a beautiful sunrise this morning!

The colors and clouds had changed again by the end of our morning walk.

Keep looking!

  1. I’m glad Christy sent you those videos. I miss the pelicans.
We had an incredible sunset last night.
Hot lower 80’s today. We need some winter still. There will be no peach crop if we don’t get some chill hours. All sorts of plants are popping out of the ground, way too early. Saw a frostweed 4 inches tall today. Have Dainty Sulphurs and Oranges, Pipevine Swallowtail and Snouts. And a bird I used to see a lot in the DFW area, Yellow rumped Warbler – I have had one hanging around the last 2 days. All the birds are singing – White Crowned Sparrows, Titmice, Chickadees, both wrens, cardinals, house finches and tons of Lesser Goldfinches.

    1. You got a lot warmer than us. OUr high was 73. It was very nice with little wind. Though there must have been enough for the RX burn. That is a lot of butterflies. Nothing like that around my house. We got some green stuff coming up too, but not abnormal. I bet February will give us some cold. Hope so for your peaches. Fingers crossed for you.

    1. I was surprised about the burn. Would have thought they would needed more wind. However must have been some since the smoke was drifting to the northeast it looked like.
