Stop then hop

Certainly is the time of year not to pass on the drive-about tours! See something interesting and stop then hop back in the cool car. πŸ˜‰

Ok, our first stop was a little longer than a quick in and out of the car. We stopped at the Garnett Preserve to check out the mesa community. Really we were only there for a half hour which is about all the time I ever spent there when I was with Shirley.

This and the above yellow flowers are Compass Plant (Silphium laciniatum)! The grasshopper is Differential Grasshopper!

When I first viewed this little guy on the disk flower, I thought some crab spider had caught a bug.

However on closer examination, it had tricked me. It was an Ambush Bug (Phymata)!

America Bumble Bee (Bombus pensylvanicus) did its work!

Here are the leaves for the Compass Plant. Some of the young leaves were not lobed.

I just liked the colors on the fading ray flowers!

Isn’t this just pretty? I have no idea what it is but if you know let me know please!

Open wide! Two-leaf Senna seed pod.

Now we were back on the road! First stop was for the Smooth Gayfeather (Liatris squarrosa)!

A colorful natural arrangement, the Mountain-Pink (Centaurium beyrichii) and Dogweed (Dysodiopsis tagetoides)!

A Kissing Bug (Apiomerus spissipes) catches a Buprestidae beetle on Gumweed or Saw-leaf Daisy (Grindelia ciliata).

A white Mountain-Pink (Centaurium beyrichii)!

Our last stop and hop was at the blooming Bluebells (Eustoma grandiflorum)!

Keep looking!

The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.

  1. Looks like the senna pod is saying,” feed me.” And i love dried compass leaves. Cool stop and hop trip.

  2. What a lovely drive-about! Envious! Your unknown could be Indian mallow seed capsules – Abutilon fruticosum.

    1. I am not familiar with that species and it is not on the LBJ list. I need to go back next spring to check for it for sure..Thanks for the suggestion!
