Blue bruiser

Another morning picking blackberries. I really loved it when the wind changed to the northwest at 10:45am! While I picked, the Painted Bunting was serenading for his love. πŸ˜‰

The clouds and wind were perfect for pickin! And our high temperature for the day reached only 82. Can’t beat that with a stick πŸ™‚

While out pickin’, this colorful true bug nymph crawled up on top!

Early this morning I spotted this owlfly on the Wavy Thistle! Its wings shone in the early morning light!

Moments later, it extended it abdomen in the air. It has long antennas with strong clubs at the ends. There are seven species in North America and this one is Ululodes macleayanus!

This is the only genus with a split eye in our area. However, BugGuide says it is trait shared by other owlflies in the tribes of Ascalaphini and Ululodini. They are predators of other flying insects. Cool insect!

A cool bolete mushroom!

It was a blue bruiser!

  1. I didn’t know about the split eyes! There’s a water beetle like that for above and below surface… Wonder why on owl fly!

  2. I loved the dogs sleeping article. Interesting about apes using sign language while dreaming. Never heard that before. Those clouds are surely different. And beautiful. Great picture.
