Back at Ladonia Units

Jeff Quayle and I led a group from the NPAT Ft. Worth chapter to the Caddo NG. Meeting at Tractor Supply in Bonham, the group was eager to head out. It had been two and half weeks since I was last there. So I was hoping for new plants on the Blackland Prairie.

Just inside the gate, Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia sphaerocarpa) was producing it’s globose seed pods. I asked the group to keep a sharp eye out for the Frosted Elfin caterpillars. However, none were found. Therefore, I will assume that they had pupated already for the season. Now they will wait under ground until next spring!

A grasshopper nymph used a seed pod for a resting place!

Meadow Pinks (Sabatia campestris) were stand outs!

The weevils and beetles were swarming this Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta var pulcherrima)!

Pink Milkwort (Polygala incarnata)!

Was this Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta var pulcherrima) embarrassed LOL?

The lovely Venus Looking-glass (Triodanis) was nestled among the other plants. It is annual. The seed capsules have an interesting feature. Their capsules open like a window shadow. The position of these pores can help you key to species.

Lastly, the Prairie Rose (Rosa setigera var tomentosa)! There are nine species listed in the Flora of North Central Texas. It makes for colorful plant in the prairie at the Caddo NG!

I will stop here today. Tomorrow, more from this morning outing. 🙂

Keep looking!

The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.
