Sucked in…

What a wonderful day in the field with Suzanne! I thought it was going to be cloudy for most of the morning. However by the time we reached the northern units at Caddo NG the sun had popped out. The sky was mostly clear. Our first stop was at a gate so I could record the location of a gate. Then it sucked us in LOL.

First photo was of these neatly wrapped Wild Onions!

Suzanne recognized these leaves, the Large Coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima)!

The Mayapples were blooming!

The fruit was forming!

A really tiny Daddy Longlegs! Neither of us had seen one this small before. Obviously a different species than we normally see.

A new plant for us, Wood Betony (Pedicularis canadensis)! If we had not seen the flowers, we thought its leaves were very fern-like.

A possible Black-etched Prominent (Tecmessa scitiscripta) was leaf mining. This species feeds on cherry, poplar, and willow. And there were a dozen of these critters on the Chokeberry. Correction: This is the White Furcula (Furcula borealis).

The Little Wood Saytrs were dancing along the path! It wasn’t until we headed back and the air was warming up, that I got this shot.

Back at Bonham SP for lunch, we spotted the Wild Blue Indigo blooming!

One final destination after lunch was a patch of the Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia sphaerocarpa)! It was so close to blooming! We looked for larvae and adults but found neither of the Frosted Elfins today in this patch.

Thanks Suzanne! It was another wonderful day in the field!

Keep looking!

The more you know, the more you see and the more you see, the more you know.

  1. Such different things. Wonder if the large coneflower would live here. You had an especially fun day with Suzanne.
