It was a fairly pleasant start to the day at 76 degrees. But at 10am the wind turned from the south to the northwest and the temp dropped to 65. Then by the afternoon it rewarmed up to 72. And the wind was windy all day.
First photo today! This is a hover fly (Syrphidae). A lucky shot here where you can see the haltere. This is the light colored appendage near the base of the wings in this photo. The halters are modified hindwings which act as gyroscopes in flight. So if the critter only has two wings start your ID search in the Flies (Diptera) order.
The fruit flies were once again on my wonderful thistle!
This morning Eastern Leaf-footed Bugs (Leptoglossus phyllopus ) were flocking to the thistle for breakfast! Quoting Claire, “Piercing-sucking mouthparts, that’s their motto!” (about Hemiptera).
Leaf miners had also been to the thistle. Looks like it is looking back at me LOL!
A weird double puffball!
Pink Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa ) blowin in the wind!
This crab spider really blends in!
The chickadee is still on the nest, but Claire wondered if the parent might have keeping the babies warm.
Two fer one! I was actually focused on the Eastern Tent caterpillar climbing the poison ivy. When I got home and loaded the photo, I noticed the fruit fly (Tephritidae family) above the cat. Sneaky, eh!
All rodents must chew because their teeth never stop growing . Jeanne made this video of the squirrel taking care of its dental requirements. Thanks Jeanne!
