What Pretty Legs

If you look up Hyla (tree frog) on Wikipedia, it says this genus is no longer in the Americas. Moreover if you look up Gray treefrog in Wikipedia it goes by the scientific name of Dryophytes versicolor. The other treefrog, Cope’s gray treefrog goes by Dryophytes chrysoscelis. To confuse the matter even more iNaturalist still lists both in the genus Hyla.

About a month ago we were regularly seeing the tiny treefrogs at the backdoor.
They were very adorable!
The little pads!
This morning out the back door a treefrog was wedged into trim. And now about twice the size.
Indeed the pads look like suction cups!
Then today when Jeanne and I were checking nestboxes we found the treefrog was back in the box again. It was absent from the box last week.
What pretty legs!

Both the Cope’s gray treefrog (Dryophytes or Hyla chrysoscelis) and Gray Treefrog (Dryophytes or Hyla versicolor) range includes North Texas. Additionally both species can be the greenish or the brownish colors. And the only sure way to differentiate between the two is by call or DNA.
