Colors of the Prairie

If you like splashy color, now would be great time to head to the prairies on the LBJ NG.

The many colors of the prairie!
Barbara’s Buttons (Marshallia caespitosa) and Missouri Primrose (Oenothera macrocarpa) are participating in the spring colors!
Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa) are still going but will be gone soon.
Indeed the Foxgloves (Penstemon cobaea) are having a great moment this spring!
A small beetle tops the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea angustifolia)! The coneflowers are just getting started.

Even the ground dwelling creatures get a spectacular view of the Standing Winecup (Callirhoe pedata)!
Greenthread (Thelesperma filifolium)!
So I looked for the white Yucca Moths but only found katydids nestled in the lovely Arkansas Yucca (Yucca arkansana) flowers. Indeed I was not disappointed with the katydids.

Yellow Flax (Linum rigidum)!

No matter what color you like best, you will certainly find your favorite color now in the prairies or the roadsides! 🙂

Today was First Wednesday. So this pic was fresh from today. The photos above were all taken on sunny Sunday morning. Same location. 🙂

  1. I haven’t seen many Barbaras buttons this year. Must not have looked in right place. Love the name glacier mice.
