Tons of Babies!

The prairie is always alive with both life and death.

Plants that hit their prime in the fall includes the Narrow-leaf Gayfeather (Liatris punctata var mucronata) and Whitlow Wort (Paronychia virginica)!

A beautiful prairie spider, the Banded Argiope (Argiope trifasciata)!
A honey bee makes for a nice sweet meal!
Leavenworth’s Eryngo (Eryngium leavenworthii) was fading. However Jeanne noticed something else.
Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)! There are only two species in the genus in North American. In Texas the range of Peucetia viridans and Peucetia longipalpis overlaps. Typically P. viridans has the chevron pattern. However P. longipalpis lacks the chevrons.
Carefully she was watching over her babies! In fact she will guard them for 10 days or more, before the spiderlings dispersing by ballooning.

  1. That spiderling video is perfect – all the moving young and close up of mom at the same time. She looked pretty defensive.
No way to pick put a fav on the wildlife photos but the springtail and slime mold really got my attention esp how the photographer created the image.

    Lynx babies!

Although you and Jeanne have pointed out Whitlow-wort to me, I still wouldn’t be able to walk up to it and identify it. But I really love saying the name.

I was watching online, and I just wanted to say congratulations on the NPSOT Shirley Lusk award. I can’t think of anyone more deserving. I’m really proud to have known you both!

  3. I’m a lynx spider fan – always get excited when I find one. And congrats again to you both, Mary and Diane, for your very well-deserved awards! 🤩🎖🏆
