I believe that it has gotten hot, eh. 103F was our high today. And lucky for me that I don’t have to go far to find good stuff.

Thus just stepping out the back door I find good stuff!
So the Woodhouse’s Toad (Bufo woodhouseii) is a frequent visitor. This one was medium sized. In fact it is toad-ly cool to have them out the back door. The toad has a tympanic membrane that lies just behind the eye for its ear.
A female Common Whitetail. In contrast dragonflies have no sense of hearing, can’t smell, can’t vocalize, and although they sport six legs – can’t even walk.
Certainly the squirrels in the woods are entertaining. Not sure what this one was doing. It kept sniffing the old Greenbriar vine. In case you were wondering, squirrels hear just fine.

Honey bees have been gathering at one of our water features. No ears on honey bees. So they detect sound two ways. The subgenual organ located on tibia and the Johnson’s organ on their antennae.
Find the cottontail. 🙂 Its got big ears.
On the front leg of a katydid you will find the tymbal (its ear). It is the small slit near the joint. Indeed I hope I wasn’t too loud.

In brief everyone has a way to communicate and make sense of the world. I toad-ly think it is all so interesting.
