Just the bare bones

Oh my what a beautiful day today! Gracie insisted that I sit outside with her for awhile. I did not object. LOL. Hope you got some outdoor time too. Now back to Tuesday’s (Jan 3rd) outing.

So bones are the internal structure of vertebrates. Indeed this is definitely not a bone, but certainly is key to the paper wasps structure of their home.

Like the exuvia of a cicada are not bones either, but the exoskeleton does support them.

A bird’s bones have hollow chambers which allows air to flow there, thus increasing the oxygen supply. It surprised me to learn that bird bones actually are just as heavy as a similar sized mammal bones.

An old deer skull. Someone had a good gnaw on it.

Hidden in the leaf liter on the side of a ravine. Of course I pulled it out for a closer look.

We were puzzled as to what kind of creature it was.

Maybe flipping it would help? No not really. LOL.

The structure was pretty interesting. So my search at home leads me to believe it is a fish skeleton. Perhaps a catfish? Like the duck feathers, this too was not near a pond or lake. If you recognize it, please comment.

Sticking out of the soil was a group of petrified wood pieces.

Viewed from the top, we could see that they were all from the same branch! The structure of trees also reminds me of a skeleton.

And so that was the bare bones of that Tuesday’s outing. 🙂

  1. Wow, that’s amazing about the weight of bird bones. I’ve always thought (think I was told/learned) that they evolved to be lighter for flight. But I can understand how they must be super sturdy, given the torque stresses of flying.

  2. Wow! Beavers. Who woulda thought it. Thanks. And like Suzanne i always thought bird bones were much lighter to aid flight.
